Garry: Rain all day. Mom chose route over the mountain. 25k of hard climb. We are staying & eating at monastery in Roncesvalles. Now in Spain. Tough day. Easy, flat half marathon tomorrow. Mass tonight at 2000, perihelion meal with a bottle of wine in the monastery at 2030.
I planned the valley route and thought we could stop @ 12.4 km in Valcarlos but the guy at the pilgrims office said go this route. Would have a lot of pics after climbing 1000 meters but for the rain and fog.
We're having fun here. More than just the hike is challenging. Finding rooms etc. We found a room at a monastery. We left St. Jean late (9:30am) and with long day didn't arrive in Roncesvalles til 1730. Bunk bed was 9.5 EU. Peregrine meal was 10EU with a couple bottles wine. Went to mass then supper. Now time for bed.
8 person room. I am the only guy. I was sleeping but your mom and another lady woke me up with their snoring. Now the old German lady started snoring. Wasn't referring to your mother. We have a couple German ladies in the room.
We passed a marker where a Brazilian pilgrim died on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. There were some areas with sheer drops on the side of the trail. 100 meter drops or so.
