Joyce got up early. I agreed to go downstairs to grab care. Nothing open at 5:43 so we hit the road in early morning twighlight. Plenty of lights heading out of Pamplona. Stainless Camino markers the entire way through.
We were first to reach cafe in Cizur Menor 5.1 km away. We were moving at >3 mi/hr for a couple miles with slowing uphill the last mile. Still got 5k in just an hour. Joyce got huevos (eggs) over easy y jamon y pan con cafes in leche (and ham and bread with coffee and milk). I just had pan y cafe (bread & coffee) but had to help her finish.
Joyce's knee feels better with rest and brace but sore other knee from compensating. She is going to Farmicia across the street to buy another one.
Stopped at Zariquiegui for cafe/rest. 2.3 km to Alto de Perdon, elevation 790 meters we are at 520 or so. Alto de Perdon: "where the way of the wind meets the way of the stars"

Ok, a rundown on the day then I will add some pics. Got on the road at 5:42. Made real good time going up. Pretty slow going down but Joyce's knee is feeling better. We were only planning on walking 17.2 km to Urtega but when we reached the town she felt good so we kept moving. She felt a little tired and sore when we reached Obanos @ 21.5 km, so we got a double at a hostel con private banos. Stopped just 2.3 km sort of guidebook stop. Room was 20 EU but went to supermercado and bought pasta, sauce, vino, cerveza & crisps for only 7,18 EU so not bad for a day. We hit town @ 12:30 so an early day after 6:45 walking.
A litre of San Miquels was only 1,45 EU. I only bought it because St. Michael is patron saint of parachutists, soldiers, wrestlers, etc. Vino Blanco was 2,80.

Chrystal: Dad's Charm?
J: No all mom, Please disregard all the horrible pictures of me. Dad just snaps and sends. Having a great time. Thanks Scott for the knee info. Resting the right tonight. Walking is easy just knee problems.
Garry: The guide book has us averaging 25 km/day with 4 off days to finish in 35 dias. The scheduled 1st 4 days were only about 22km/day due to the terrain. We are only behind the guide book by 2.3 km. Mileage will get longer as terrain gets gentler. We go pretty fast on level or gentle to moderate inclines and gentle descents.
Mom wants the ice cream eating picture deleted from the blog. [ Kyle: Can't delete pictures... Editor's choice :) ]
Preview for tomorrow: Road to Estella Bella. 24.1 km. Primarily on dirt paths with gently rolling ups & downs passing through picturesque medieval towns. Authentic stretches of Roman road and a Roman bridge invites walkers to step back in time.
We can watch TV but we have to watch movies we have seen many times so we know what's happening or know the words.
We went out to get additional items at market but they are on siesta til 1730 so we went for a walk.

Garry: We went for a walk because mom wanted chocolate.
Some side notes:
- I added up our miles to 55.5 which means only 444.5 to go! Of course we walked 203 miles extra by following the flatter, longer river route.
- Some pilgrims have their backpack transported to the next town and just carry a small day pack. Unlike hotels in the US, the amount stated for room is what you pay. They don't add state, local, county, or luxury taxes to add 40%.
- Suggested tip for good service is 10% and they don't add tax for prepared food.
- More math, at 55 miles, we are 11% finished after tomorrow we will be at 70 miles and be 14% finished. multiply miles by .2 to get percent.
Dawn & Belinda:I know this is very American of me, but dad, when you write the miles you are walking each day, can you put it in miles? I apparently can't quickly enough figure out the kilometers...
Garry: OK, I will. Remember 5k is 3.1, 10k 6.2. I suppose you want food etc in English also...
[Editor's note - They're in Spain. Where people speak Spanish and measure in kilometers. I say, "When in Rome..."]
